ABOUT CRAIG SHERMAN
Craig Sherman is a lifelong marketing entrepreneur, political observer, community leader, and storyteller who believes that democracy works best when citizens stay informed, ask questions, and maintain a healthy sense of humor.
Sherman was a political science major at Northwestern University and has been actively involved in numerous local political campaigns since the 1970s.
After spending decades in marketing and sales, Sherman turned his attention toward political satire and civic messaging, combining simple rhyme, memorable imagery, and humor to communicate complex political and cultural issues in a format designed for everyday readers.
The title The Nut With a Gut was inspired in part by one of the most famous political advertising exchanges in American history. During the 1964 presidential campaign, supporters of Barry Goldwater used the slogan:
“In your heart, you know he’s right.”
President Lyndon Johnson’s campaign famously countered with:
“In your guts, you know he’s nuts.”
That combination of humor, simplicity, and political messaging helped inspire the title and tone of this project.
What Sherman didn’t know when he conceived this title was that the subject confirmed it himself. In a November 2018 interview that appeared in Newsweek and several other news outlets, he stated the following:
“I have a gut, and my gut tells me more sometimes than anybody else's brain can ever tell me."
The Nut – November 27, 2018 – Newsweek
Sherman discovered this quote after completing the manuscript – proof, perhaps, that satire and reality occasionally arrive at the same destination independently.
Sherman describes this book as more than satire. He views it as a “civic syllabus” — an invitation for readers to laugh, think, research, debate, and participate in democracy.
